What is Editorial Design? by Juan Diaz

Editorial Design Basics by Design by Numbers

In the video "Editorial Design Basics" by Design by Numbers it first describes the need of a grid system. A grid system is a structure of a page that is made the same way. Besides the consistency of the grid it is also necessary and important  to have consistency of elements as well in each page. A example being figuring out the hierarchy for the layout. If the hierarchy is confusing then the layout will be inconsistent and confusing. This can lead to people and viewers to not read or even notice your design. When it comes to hierarchy in books you typically see the grids at work with capitalized bold titles and illustrations or design on one side of the page. With this hierarchy on the books and following these type of rules you can easily capture the attention of readers making them more focus on your content. When the design or the background of the page is simple or just a simple color you can play around with the layout. You can overlap above and under words, changing the size of font and letters as well. Sometimes you can even break the grid allowing for more creativity.

1.This Is Me, Full Stop by Here Design

The editorial design of "This Is Me, Full Stop by Here Design"  is one of the few that intrigues me for how simple it is, The design itself is simple as it gets straight to the point making it easier for the reader to understand the author point or message of the book. Furthermore the font of the text provided consistency, allowing illustration and design free reign. With the font of the text being simple as in not having an curves characteristics it allows for the font itself to be friendly and approachable with it also being able to appeal to all types of audience. The editorial design tell me that this book appeal to everyone no matter their level of intellect or academic level. They even further show their simple design within the book as well by keeping the same color and font from the cover as well. They even overall used positive and negative space to make the book stand out. Although from looking at it seem simple to create and do but as  Here Design’s Caz Hildebrand says It is always a joy to work with whitespace, though of course it is a challenge to have so much freedom.”

2.Circular 19 by Pentagram

The editorial design of Circular 19 by Pentagrams is another one of the designs that is interesting to me as they play around with big type small type and many more different concept that make their magazine standout. The first page of the magazine is an idea I like as they don't really use hierarchy put everything together to make a form of art. Its like its graffiti with all being stack one on top of the other. With that they also played with overlapping the letter and number. Their message is pretty simple as it directed to designers with an interest in type and typography together. As stated before they use big and small type. The size of the type helps designers and people question the and challenge the preconceptions around what type is used for. The format of the lettering make people think that type isn't just used for information but also to be used as a form of design and art as well. Seeing this type of design also makes me think about even trying to have proper format when creating a book or magazine as you can just be creative with words and type as anything can be made into a design.

3.Photo District News website by James Johnson

This type of editorial design known as the Photo District News website by James Johnson is a type of format and style I have seen used in hundred of websites and media pages. This type of design sustains a lot of information but uses a simple layout incorporating mainly one background color to avoid clutter and to have a clear sense of organization within the website. Although with this being online and in website it is harder to control the way the website will look depending on the device like on the computer or on a phone. With you unable to control the way the website is show on different device its important to make the articles flexible and resilient to changing conditions. Its also important to get the main ideas across in each format to ensure  the format stays the same and prevent any visual changes if it gets to long. To ensure to have a clean and function layout design it always important for the editor and the designer to have a strong relationship between one another  to prevent any mistakes like have line widths that are too wide. Having a strong relationship with the editor and designer goes a long way in ensuring that people want to read the article.
